United started off on fire at the top of
the first innings with 3 up 3 down. Gemma Bush was well caught
at centrefield after a diving catch by Anita Palm. Pitcher
Belinda English took a good reflex catch off Kate Daff and
Nicola Cowan was thrown out at first by third base Tanya
Petersen. United scored two runs in the first dig with lead off
Tammie Hall and Lisa Sweeney scoring. Jacqui Terrance was thrown
out at first by pitcher Nadia Dittman. Tanya Petersen hit a nice
double to centrefield, advanced to third on a wild pitch, while
Belinda English made first base on a walk and advanced to second
on a past ball. Unfortunately Petersen was tagged out at home
for the second out trying to steal on the past ball. Louise Cole
flied out to leftfield Kate Daff leaving Palm and English on
base.

Sluggers were once again kept scoreless at the top of the second
with lead off Chanel Anderson and Julie Symonds thrown out at
first by shortstop Tammie Hall. Nadia Dittman made first on an
error by third base, was advanced by second batter Symonds, and
third by the safe single to leftfield by Jenna Kaddatz. But that
was where the innings ended with Stef Leather K2'd by pitcher
English. United's second innings started well with a safe single
to rightfield by lead off Peta Gibbs. Gibbs was advanced by
Amber Harrison after a wild throw from pitcher Nadia Dittman to
allow Harrison on base and a wild pitch seen Gibbs on third.
Tammie Hall was thrown out at first by shortstop Nicola Cowan,
Lisa Sweeney was caught at secondbase by Julie Symonds. Jacqui
Terrance was walked to first but Gibbs and Terrance were left on
base when Tanya Petersen flied out to centrefield Gemma Bush.
Top of the third was a replay of the first for Sluggers with
Donna Mott well caught on a foul fly to third base Tanya
Petersen who had to contend with the fence. Gemma Bush also
picked out third base Petersen for a fly ball and Kate Daff
flying out to leftfield Lisa Sweeney. United once again didn't
trouble the scorers with lead off Belinda English thrown out at
first by shortstop Cowan. Anita Palm hit a safe single to
leftfield and stole second and third but that was where she
stayed. Louise Cole made base after an error to catcher Chanel
Anderson and stole second before Peta Gibbs flied out to
centrefield Bush and Amber Harrison thrown out at first by
pitcher Dittman. Score line 2-0 with 2 runners left on base.

The top of the fourth was the money innings for Sluggers scoring
five (5) runs. Nicola Cowan started well with a safe single to
leftfield, Chanel Anderson then followed up with a safe double
to rightfield advancing Cowan to third base. Cowan and Anderson
scored on errors allowing the successive batters Nadia Dittman
and Julie Symonds on base. Jenna Kaddatz flied out to
centrefield Palm for the first out before Stef Leather connected
for a safe double to centrefield scoring Dittman and Symonds as
RBI's. Donna Mott was United's second out thrown out at first by
pitcher Peta Gibbs. Gemma Bush hit a safe single to leftfield
and stole second before Kate Daff was caught at rightfield by a
diving Jacqui Terrance. United were 3 up 3 down at the bottom of
the third with Tammie Hall flying out to third base Jenna
Kaddatz, Lisa Sweeney flying out to leftfield Kate Daff and
Jacqui Terrance uncharacteristically K'2d. Score line Sluggers 5
- United 2.
Nicola Cowan led off the Sluggers in the fifth with a safe
single to centrefield but was thrown out at secondbase by
shortstop Tammie Hall. Chanel Anderson made first on the
fielder's choice play by shortstop, but second was where she
stayed after Nadia Dittman was thrown out at first by pitcher
Gibbs and Julie Symonds flied out to shortstop Tammie Hall.
United were 3 up 3 down at the bottom of the fifth with Petersen
and English thrown out at first by secondbase Julie Symonds and
shortstop Nicola Cowan respectively and Anita Palm flying out to
centrefield Gemma Bush.
Once again at the top of the sixth Sluggers were 3 up 3 down
with the first two batters Jenna Kaddatz and Stef Leather K2'd
by pitcher Peta Gibbs and Donna Mott thrown out at first by
secondbase Amber Harrison. United once again failed to convert a
runner on base. Louise Cole was thrown out at first by third
base Jenna Kaddatz, Peta Gibbs punched a double to rightfield
and made third on batter 9 - Amber Harrison who was thrown out
at first by pitcher Dittman. Tammie Hall then closed the innings
flying out to centrefield Bush - leaving Gibbs in scoring
position.

United once again defended well at the top of the seventh with
Gemma Bush flying out to shortstop Hall. Kate Daff was placed in
scoring position after being walked to first base. Nicola Cowan
was thrown out at first by pitcher Gibbs, before Chanel Anderson
punched a safe single to rightfield and advancing Daff to third.
Nadia Dittman was Slugger's last out flying out to leftfield
Lisa Sweeney. In a last ditch effort United were only able to
peg back one run. Lead off Lisa Sweeney made first on a walk and
stole secondbase. Jacqui Terrance was once again K2'd by pitcher
Dittman before a wild throw by third base Jenna Kaddatz allowed
Tanya Petersen on base and runner Sweeney to score. English made
first on an error and was United's second out, holding up too
long on the Palm safe centrefield hit, put out at secondbase.
Louise Cole closed out the game flying out to shortstop Cowan
with two runners left on base. Score line 5-3.
Congratulations to Sluggers who toppled Minor Premiers United
for back to back Premierships. Sluggers topped the safe hits
with 7 to United's 5 and clawed their way back with a 5 run 4th
innings to put United on the back foot. United fought hard to
overcome the deficit and paid the penalty for leaving eight
runners on base in scoring positions. United will be looking
forward to spoiling the Premiership Hat trick for Sluggers in
the 2008/2009 Season. Until then.

A big “hello” from your new
committee. This year, every position was filled from the very
first meeting. I am happy with the make up of my “team” as it
combines competent new people with some experienced members
continuing in their former portfolio. Our groundsman has already
been back at work, so our season is technically already
underway. Our finances are very healthy, the umpiring group is
gearing up for a clinic before the season start to ensure the
game is officiated well and you are doing your bit today by
signing up, ensuring that all these preparations become
meaningful. A healthy membership is the last ingredient required
for a great season and I encourage you to let all your friends
know that Bundaberg Softball is “Ready to Rock” for the summer.

Well Grand
Final day has come and gone and what great softball we saw
right throughout the day. The U/14’s kicked off proceedings with
a tightly fought battle for the majority of the game. I was very
impressed by the ability these players showed as they all put on
a great game. United’s depth of pitching was to be the ultimate
difference as West’s just couldn’t close out the last innings. A
well deserved win from the United team well coached by Sharon
Gear and a great effort from Chris Pohlman’s young West team.
Next up it was time for the U/16’s to take the field. The
Sluggers’ team knew that we would have to be playing our very
best to have a chance against West’s, and that is precisely how
the team performed. On the back of Sam and Tyler’s efforts as
our battery, the kids hardly put a foot wrong. They never
allowed the strong West batting line-up to click into gear and
were very aggressive in the batting box and around the bases.
Tash Richardt and I were extremely proud of how everyone did
what they had to do. I would like to congratulate West’s on
their season as they played some top softball throughout the
year and I know they will be disappointed at not achieving their
“Holy Grail”. However I want to encourage them to return next
year and continue their journey as there are a number of very
talented athletes.
I suspected the Men’s game was going to be a beauty and I was
right. ATW came out very strong through the first three digs and
held a comfortable lead but couldn’t hold a strong West’s
line-up who fought back to level the scores and then produce
enough runs to finish off ATW at the end of two hours of
entertaining softball. At the same time the B Grade Ladies game
was under way and Minor Premiers West’s stole a march very early
and kept a gallant Bargara under pressure to wind up comfortable
winners to seal a wonderful season.
Finally the A Grade Ladies took to the diamond and again
Sluggers knew that it would take a mighty effort to overcome a
United outfit that had been on a roll since the Christmas break.
I was asked during the week which area of the game would be
crucial and I thought our batting had to be more productive to
put the United defence under pressure. I can tell you that I was
concerned after the end of the first inning as we trailed by two
and that could have been more. However we kept true to our
promise to each other to do the very best we can and let the
result take care of itself. We did reasonably well through the
next two innings and held out United even though they pressured
us with their lead off batters gaining base but not scoring,
while we started to swing the bat very well. The main feature
here was that we were keeping most of our hits on the ground and
starting to get the gaps and put runners on base.
I was hoping that we would at least score in the next dig but
was blown away as every hitter came out with a new purpose and
the pressure told on the defence as we collected 5 big runs. It
was just what the doctor ordered as the intensity in the field
lifted and we were able to hold out to score a memorable win.
Over the years United and Sluggers have developed a healthy
rivalry on the field and again both teams gave nothing away and
fought the game out with the intensity we have all come to
expect. I was over the moon at how the team stepped up to the
challenge and received their just reward.

Personally I walked on to the park nervous about how both
Sluggers teams would handle the occasion and walked away a very
proud coach of two teams that gave me everything I asked for and
more. I hope that all those who fell just short of their goals
are proud of what they achieved throughout the year, and that
the winners enjoy the feeling of success. I hope that I see you
all next season for another season of this wonderful sport.
Lastly I would like to ask you all to take a moment and think
about the people that do the hard yards and make sure each week
you all enjoy playing softball. The committee again has done
their part to ensure we can get on the diamonds so I would like
to think you might all take the time to say thank you to these
wonderful people. If you had an idea during the year as to how
we may improve what happens each week then why don’t you come
and talk to the committee and let them know how we can do things
better.
Until next time I wish you all a great off season and all the
best to our rep teams and officials that will take to the
diamonds around the state
