Warm up routine by Keith Dell,
Director of Barolin Physiotherapy Services

Madelyn McCracken (Bingera under 14 girls)

Alloway became the first team to register
a win over Waves in the Archem Premier League. Waves had the
better of the first half but neither side were able to score in
the first half Alloway scored two goals in the second half, the
first from Danny Tucker a cracker into the top left corner.
Their second came from a Brad Blackwell free kick, while Elliott
Causer the leading goal score in the league scored for Waves for
Alloway to register a 2-1 win.

Danny Tucker
Alloway coach Richard Sharman felt that his new look defensive
line of Shane Stewart-Cook, John Dixon, Brad Blackwell and Jason
Piper had performed strongly while Danny Tucker was tireless up
front. Brad Blackwell at left full back regularly created
attacking opportunities. Youngster Jason Blackwell had probably
his best game for Alloway and was named man of the match. Mid
fielder Clayton Mattiazzi, Jack Brillante and John Giovannoni
were among Waves best.
With no games next weekend due to school holidays and the FBI
Cup quarter finals on the 12th July Waves next league encounter
will be against Villa on the 19th July. Meanwhile Alloway’s next
league clash will be there home game against Bingera on the
20th.
Diggers played out there second draw in a row when they came
from behind to draw 2 all with Bingera. Bingera scored first
when Matt Kirby headed past keeper Chris Ballantyne however
scores were level when Luke Metcalf headed the ball into his own
goal to see the score 1-1 at half time.
Substitute Jake Brough broke the deadline and Bingera looked set
for a win with only two minutes remaining. Diggers coach Nathan
Darlington, whose season may be over following a knee ligament
injury pulled the right rein when he instructed Michael White to
move up front, with White scoring the equaliser almost
immediately.
Nog Connelly, who ran things from the bench in Darlington’s
absence, was pleased to get a draw after what he claimed was a
poor performance. Bingera are struggling for cohesion and will
need to improve to be a threat towards the end of the year,
however the signs are promising.
The game between Brothers Aston Villa and Burnett Heads resulted
in Villa recording their second win of the season and the goal
by Jamie Anderson was the goal of the day. Mal Cooper scored a
double in the 3-0 win. The gap between fourth placed Diggers and
Burnett Heads (fifth) is now eight points and though Villa and
Burnett Heads have a game in hand it is hard to see either side
playing in the finals.

Football Bundaberg have shown they mean business with two
players suspended for four Club matches after failing to
front for the rep game against Gympie.
Isis stalwart Vince Brockfield the $110.00 powerball winner
for the week. Tickets available at the bar.
Alloway captain Shane Stewart-Cook will have his “bucks’
party” on the 28th July before getting married at seasons
end. Wonder how many parties he will get in before the big
day?
John Hendricks issued 7 yellow cards and one red in a match
on Friday night. Son Wes received one of the yellows for
dissent.
The North Bundaberg connection of Jim Cairney, Peter Hubbard
and Grant Connelly (Div 2 Manager) conducted the draw for
the FBI Cup quarter finals on Friday night. As a result
North Bundaberg drew ATW (Div 1). Nice work boys.
The Alloway crowd was out in force at the Cellblock on
Saturday after their win over ATW with Danny Tucker
celebrating his 23rd birthday.

Interview.
BB Well Lynn, the season is more than half done, what have been
your impressions to date?,
LH The QSL has developed into a very strong competition over the
course of the year. It wasn’t strong at the beginning of the
season but it certainly is now. I think it has been a great
success and will get better in years to come. Every one of us
has had to step up a few levels, including me, but the
experience has been invaluable.
BB The players have performed admirably; they seem to get better
each game.
LH We’ve been a bit “in and out” but we are getting more
consistent as the season has gone on. Lack of concentration has
been one of our main problems and we have given away too many
goals simply because players have gone to sleep in critical
situations. We go out to win every game – there’s no other way
to play in my opinion.
BB What do you think has been the best performance to date?
LH Last weeks performance against the Strikers was our best game
to date. They took it very seriously, bringing new players in
and coming up the night before so they would be well rested. We
pushed them all the way and opened them up on quite a few
occasions. Had we converted even one of our chances anything
might have happened.
BB Four away games in a row could be tough?
LH We seem to struggle mentally playing away from Martens Oval
and I’ve told the players that they won’t have proved themselves
until they can start winning away from home. We’ve performed
really well against 3 of the top 4 teams in our last 3 matches
and it would be a shame to let that slip now against sides lower
down the table but every team is improving so all the games will
be tough.
BB In a poll on the QSL website 29% expect that of the bottom
four sides the Spirit will improve the most before the end of
the season. That must be encouraging?
LH How many of them are local supporters following the link from
your web site, Bob? Support is always good, but the players
still have to go out and do it.
BB Do you have any expectations from the remaining games?
LH Win all of them.
BB There has been a lack of corporate support; do you see that
as a problem?
LH It has to improve. It’s still early days and maybe we have to
look at raising funds in more creative ways, but it is such a
good product with a lot of media support and coverage. The
concept of one-team cities and expanded competitions is the
future of sport. It is already happening in other sports like
rugby league and basketball. The Spirit provides something for
our young players to aim for and support. I think it is the best
thing that has ever happened to regional football.
BB Have you been happy with the crowd support?
LH The crowds have been fantastic. I want all the supporters to
know that their presence and cheering really does lift the team
immensely. I wish we could take them with us on the road. The
team has also captured the imagination of the youngsters as they
drag their parents out to watch and come looking for players’
autographs every week.
BB What do you think needs to be done to see the Spirit thrive?
LH More sponsorship. The concept and the product are so good
that I think support from fans is guaranteed. We also need to
start developing our future Spirit players and we have plans to
do that.
BB Have there been any negatives?
LH It is clear that the Spirit hasn’t been embraced by everyone
in the football community, but I’m very hopeful that we will win
them over sooner rather than later. There are lots of pluses for
everybody.
BB Do you see yourself at the helm next year?
LH The players performances will be reviewed at the end of the
season and so will mine, I imagine. In any case, if I feel that
I haven’t done the job well enough I will offer the club the
opportunity to replace me, with no hard feelings. I’m enjoying
it so far and I believe my coaching is improving as the season
progresses but like I have said to the players many times –
“nobody is guaranteed of anything.”

Bundaberg Toyota Spirit’s attacking deficiencies were
again exposed as they battled out a scoreless draw with
Capricorn Cougars in Rockhampton on Saturday night. The
result left them on the bottom of the table after ninth
placed Logan United remained one point ahead of them,
courtesy of a 2-2 draw with Brisbane Strikers, but coach
Lynn Hodgkinson remains unperturbed about their position.
“It was a good tough game and it was a pretty good result
for us – we were probably better territorially and
positionally but they had the better chances,’’ Hodgkinson
said. “It was the story of our season – we were in the
battle up to the end but we hit the cross-bar once and put a
couple wide, but they hit the bar a couple of times too –
they made more chances on goal than we did.’’
Although far from a dour performance that the score-line
could suggest, it was their fourth game in a row that they
have failed to score, but it was not for a lack of effort,
with midfielder Laurie Stephenson re-injecting extra vigour
in his return from a one-match suspension. In the absence of
striker Aaron Bakker, who was unavailable for the clash,
Hodgkinson experimented with another new combination up
front with Kyle Taylor and Jason De Papi, and he said they
also did the best they could. “I moved Jason up there to see
whether his strength and ability in the air could make a
difference for us, and he did well, and so did Kyle – he is
like the Energiser Bunny – he just went all day, as
always,’’ Hodgkinson said. “They troubled the defence but
our ability to fashion quality chances is missing at the
moment, although we put them under extreme pressure at
times.
“Certainly our defence was very good – that is the only
aspect of our game that I’m completely happy with, and it’s
not just our back four, but it’s all over the park – we have
worked on it technically and methods in defence, and it has
shown with the Strikers and Olympic each being able to only
put two goals on us in the last month.
“Our two stand-outs were again our centre-backs Sam Simpson
and Andy Wood – they have both really excelled in the
position and are really forming a good combination there.
“Daniel Watson came back into goal and did a really good job
as well, but I will give Dane Rimmington a few more go’s in
the remaining games because he did really well against
Olympic last week as well.’’
The Spirit take on Logan in the third of their four straight
away games next Saturday, and it could be their best
remaining chance to climb their way out of the cellar. “But
we can’t be thinking about the ladder – this season was
always going to be hard – I always thought this team was a
long-term prospect with the standard of the local
competition that these players have come out of,’’
Hodgkinson said. “This is a genuine State league and it is
only going to get stronger each season, and we have to just
keep working hard on building and improving. “I always said
we were not going to win many games this year and that it
would be three to four years before we will be a force -
that hasn’t changed and we have to just keep plugging
away.’’
