On the Greens with Jean Davis

Exciting week coming up with the finals of the ladies Club Championships tomorrow with one shot separating Michelle Marsden and Averil Chalmers in A grade, Jackie Petterson holding five from Jule Fry in B while Shirley Fewings can feel the hot breath of Audrey Neill in C grade, just three behind.

We have tough matches in the semi finals of the matchplay championships that will be hard to predict. Andrew Martin plays Thomas Hall, Peter Hutchieson meets Brock Wooldridge while brother Mark in the handicap division meets John Muller and Neil Shaw matches up against Ian Duncan. Finals are Saturday 5th July.

More good scores are showing up with the drier course but surprisingly have heard many comments that the course is playing tougher now. Dave Gordon with 41 points won A grade from Trevor McLeod on 40 on Saturday and Len Dyball 39 won on a countback from Graham Tesch.

Chris Herrmann 38 and Michelle Marsden 37 were the lucky winners in the ladies competition with many scores close on their heels.

David Neill shone at the Association Close Championships in Maryborough over the weekend to win 36 hole B gross. Des Turner took off 36 hole nett runner-up in C grade. Other players to score well on Saturday were John Kirchner who won daily nett in A grade with a 68/64 and Chris Rowe won the B grade nett.

Veterans Handicap Championships has been won by single figure marker John Hollands scorching in with a 66 nett on the final day to edge out Grant MacDonald on 142. Ladies champion is Myrtle Lines 149 from Thea Goodwin four strokes back.

Cock of the Walk Sunday 6th will be played here against Maryborough and we need many players to wrest the Cock back after it’s long holiday away. Tell Geoff that you will be playing to help this cause.

Bundaberg Men's Open day sponsored by LJB Tax Solutions (Linda Bryant) is looming on July 13. Club members intending to play must put their names on the sheet in the clubhouse and other clubs have sheets up to nominate.

DGZ Accountants (Scott Grogan) stableford is this Saturday with an entertaining night promised by Kerry O’Keefe, complete with chuckle, as guest.

Bargara Junior Classic is on July 7th to 9th so arrange with captain Geoff this weekend to nominate.

You cannot play a practice shot on any part of the course in stroke play prior to the competition. Penalty is disqualification. Practice swings are not permitted on tees at our course as you can read on interesting page 3 of your programme book.

Slow Play No round of golf should take longer than 4 hours 15 minutes to complete. If you feel this pace is too fast, it is recommended you golf at a time when play is not so heavy. To reduce this problem some golfers will have to move faster than they have in the past, to ensure everyone has an enjoyable round of golf. Slow play is not caused by long rough, tricky greens or a bad slice. These are the challenges that give golf its appeal. Rather, slow play is the result of bad habits that waste time and impose a slower round on everyone.

Some Time Saver Hints:

1. Always be ready to hit
-proceed directly to your own ball
-take a practice swing and get set while others are hitting
-hit when ready, even simultaneously if you will not interfere with others
-carry a spare ball with you; if in doubt...hit a provisional
-know the rules of golf, especially those pertaining to out of bounds, water hazards and lost balls

2. Don't Waste Time
- never record your scores on or near the green
- don't leave your cart or bag in front of the green.
- give instructions on the driving range, not on the course
- carry an extra ball, tees and ball marker in your pocket
- play your shot once a group is realistically out of range
- if a ball is lost, play your shot BEFORE helping search
- lost ball, 5 minutes per group per hole, maximum time

3. On The Tee
- the first player ready to hit should
- other players should wait right next to the tee markers
- after hitting, be ready to proceed to your ball

4. On The Green
- park your cart and clubs in line with the next tee
- line up your putt before it is your turn
- follow the continuous putting rules until holed out, unless restricted by another player's line
