On the Greens  with Jean Davis

The rain was just what the doctor ordered but the timing wasn’t so good and some of the morning players were chased home by the elements before they finished their round and the sudden downpour sent many on their way before they could get a start.

From those who did get their game in, Brock Wooldridge who hasn’t played much golf this year but has recently returned from a golfing trip to Thailand with Andrew Ikstrums, Trevor and Josh McLeod and others appears to be finding his old form and was the winner with 69 nett from Alan Rayner 70. If you had 76 or better then you won a ball.

The trophies donated by Ben Saywell of Lazer Plumbing will now be played for next Saturday in the mens fourball stableford and the first round of the Ladies 4BBB Championships which will finalize the following Saturday 22nd.

The best scores on Wednesday were a group of 37 points with Val Baldwin winning on a countback from Kay Tischler. Cathy Harrison and Helen Akacich. It was left to Jennifer Ey with 34 to win first division.

Brian Mackinnon’s 41 points in the Sporters day competition was just too good for Trevor McLeod with 40 so it would appear that the eleven games in twelve days overseas wasn’t quite enough for him.

We hope that the Gods of Golf smile down on Glenn McFarlane and Bruce Tree next Monday and Tuesday in the finals of the 2011 Australia and New Zealand Golfer Pacific Challenge to be played at Coolangatta /Tweed Heads. We all wish you well and we excitedly await the good news back here.

The Restricted Foursomes Championships for men is sponsored by Paul MacSween of Hughes Butchery on Sunday 23rd and the timesheet is out for the 27 holes event and the minimum handicap is 25 this year.

The Veterans AGM is on Tuesday 18th and the stableford will be a shotgun start at 10.30 so please advise Captain Len if you will be playing and attending.

Melbourne Cup Day on 1st. will be a choice of play. You may be in the 8.30 shotgun start, attend the luncheon, view the Cup and join in the sweeps or you can play at the usual time but captain Len needs to know what you have planned for the day. It is open to anyone to come along and enjoy any part of the day so we hope to have a good crowd.

Congratulations to Scott Warren of Gin Gin Club for his Hervey Bay Mens Open win on Sunday. He makes a mockery of the “more you play, the better you get” theory but his big run home with three birdies on the last three holes was a fantastic finish to win by one.

May all the ladies at the Bargara Classic be enjoying themselves this week, good scoring or not.

Slow Play No round of golf should take longer than 4 hours 15 minutes to complete. If you feel this pace is too fast, it is recommended you golf at a time when play is not so heavy. To reduce this problem some golfers will have to move faster than they have in the past, to ensure everyone has an enjoyable round of golf. Slow play is not caused by long rough, tricky greens or a bad slice. These are the challenges that give golf its appeal. Rather, slow play is the result of bad habits that waste time and impose a slower round on everyone.

Some Time Saver Hints:

1. Always be ready to hit
-proceed directly to your own ball
-take a practice swing and get set while others are hitting
-hit when ready, even simultaneously if you will not interfere with others
-carry a spare ball with you; if in doubt...hit a provisional
-know the rules of golf, especially those pertaining to out of bounds, water hazards and lost balls

2. Don't Waste Time
- never record your scores on or near the green
- don't leave your cart or bag in front of the green.
- give instructions on the driving range, not on the course
- carry an extra ball, tees and ball marker in your pocket
- play your shot once a group is realistically out of range
- if a ball is lost, play your shot BEFORE helping search
- lost ball, 5 minutes per group per hole, maximum time

3. On The Tee
- the first player ready to hit should
- other players should wait right next to the tee markers
- after hitting, be ready to proceed to your ball

4. On The Green
- park your cart and clubs in line with the next tee
- line up your putt before it is your turn
- follow the continuous putting rules until holed out, unless restricted by another player's line
