Ramaneesh
and Rudradev

Brothers Ramaneesh (8) and Rudradev (6) from
Chennai in India are in Bundaberg with mum and dad for the
Rotary Cricket Carnival. Not surprisingly the pair are keen
cricketers who both play a bit of tennis. Both are Sachin
Tendulkar fans and the brothers both support the Mumbai Indians
in the Indian Premier League.
The younger Rudradev was keen to say hi to friend Amruta back
home while Ramaneesh was not so forthcoming.
While in Australia Ramaneesh was impressed with the resort at
Mission Beach, in particular the three swimming pools and the
cartoons on TV. Rudradev on the other hand will long remember
touching a baby croc while in Innisfail.

keeping score - John Dean (NZ) and Kevin
Scanlan (Vic 9790)
JK
Mahendra said in his profile that his hobby was collecting
cricket memorabilia. That’s as big an understatement as saying
Sir Donald Bradman could bat a bit. This man is what we would call a
‘cricket tragic’. Mahendra’s collection includes an autographed
bat by Bradman, a bat signed by all 26 Indian captains to
have led the Indian team to date, a shirt signed by the South
African team which has the signature of Hanse Cronje and rare
photographs and paintings. He said "One of my prized possessions
is a book by *Ranjit Singh which I acquired in South Africa. I’m
sure there can’t be more than two or three copies in India. Its
value today at auction is more than $20,000, but I would never
sell it".
*Ranjit Singh (1780-1839)
The Father of Indian Cricket

JK Mahendra with a few of the paintings and
bats
Mahendra was an outstanding junior cricketer
and in under 19’s played 5 tests against Australia.
He also represented India against England and has dined in the
‘Long Room’ at Lords and met Queen Elizabeth and had lunch with
Lord Mountbatten the last Governor General of India.
He was the brains behind Cricket Homestay in India. 'The Bat and
Ball Inn' has five suites, four named after legendary cricketers
Sunil Gavaskar, Sir Richard Hadlee, Dennis Lillee, Sir Vivian
Richards and one named as the 'Legend Suite'.` Murals of Sachin
Tendulkar, Anil Kumble and Gavaskar, made of hand made tiles
from Nilambur in Kerala have been pasted on the compound wall of
the Homestay. The terracotta mural of Sir Donald Bradman that
stands guard at the entrance, JK. explains was a
commissioned work and the only one of its kind in the world.

The Bat & Ball Homestay
Son, Rohit Mahendra now lives in Denmark, and
is a member of the Danish national team.
One of his companies manufacture cricket bats
and Bundaberg youngster Braydon Graham will be the first to use
one in local cricket. JK Mahendra is certainly an interesting
chap with an undying passion for the game of cricket.
