The Good Sports program is an initiative of
the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) to develop safer and
healthier communities. The program helps sporting clubs manage
alcohol responsibly and reduce alcohol related problems such as
binge and underage drinking.
Displaying the Good Sports logo sends an
important message to club members and the community. It confirms
that the club promotes a responsible attitude towards alcohol
and that it provides a safe environment for players, members,
families and supporters.
Alcohol and sport form
a powerful partnership. Most major sporting competitions promote
and advertise alcohol consumption. Heavy drinking is a tradition
in many sports and for most clubs, alcohol is a major source of
revenue. However, sporting clubs today are facing new pressures
from other sports and increased responsibility for the care of
their players, members and supporters.
Good Sports, a programme aimed at assisting clubs to manage
alcohol responsibly, is holding a forum in Bundaberg on
Wednesday night to explain how clubs can learn more about
individual and club responsibilities with regard to alcohol
management and liquor licenses. Speakers will include Good
Sports Regional Manager Lachlan Sherrington, Detective Senior
Constable Matthew Steinhardt and Bundaberg Regional Council
Sports and Recreation Officer Dave Field.
Good Sports Project Officer Cathy Heidrich said the forum would
provide an opportunity for sporting club representatives to
speak with industry experts and help clubs to create a safer
environment, reduce the risk of litigation and build a family
friendly club culture.
The forum will be held on Wednesday, February 17 at the Civic
Centre supper room beginning at 6 p.m.
